About the Russian Blue
Known for their striking emerald green eyes and shimmering blue-grey coat, Russian Blues are the epitome of feline elegance. These intelligent, gentle cats form deep bonds with their families.
Appearance
The Russian Blue is a picture of elegance with its lithe, muscular body and fine-boned structure. Their most distinctive feature is their double coat—a dense, plush undercoat topped with silver-tipped guard hairs that give them their characteristic shimmer. Their vivid green eyes, set in a wedge-shaped head, seem to sparkle with intelligence and curiosity. The breed's smile, created by the upturned corners of their mouth, gives them a perpetually pleasant expression.
Personality & Temperament
Russian Blues are known for their gentle, reserved nature. They are incredibly loyal to their families and often form a particularly strong bond with one person. While they may be shy around strangers, they are playful and affectionate with those they trust. Their intelligence makes them quick learners who enjoy puzzle toys and interactive games. They are also known for their sensitivity to their owner's moods and will often offer quiet companionship during difficult times.
History & Origin
The Russian Blue's origins are shrouded in mystery and legend. It is believed they originated in the port of Arkhangelsk in northern Russia, arriving in Europe via sailors in the 1860s. They were exhibited at the first cat show at London's Crystal Palace in 1875. The breed nearly disappeared during World War II but was revived through careful breeding programs, crossing with Siamese and British Shorthairs before returning to its original type.
