About the Ragdoll
Ragdolls are known for their docile, placid temperament and affectionate nature. Named for their tendency to go limp when picked up, these stunning cats with brilliant blue eyes are the ultimate lap companions.
Appearance
Ragdolls are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, with males weighing up to 20 pounds. They have striking blue eyes, a semi-long silky coat, and come in several color patterns including colorpoint, mitted, and bicolor. Their coat lacks the dense undercoat of many long-haired breeds, making it less prone to matting.
Personality & Temperament
True to their name, Ragdolls go limp with relaxation when picked up. They are exceptionally docile, patient, and gentle, making them perfect family cats. They often follow their owners from room to room, earning them the nickname 'puppy cats.' Despite their size, they are not particularly active and prefer cuddling over climbing.
History & Origin
The Ragdoll breed was developed in the 1960s by Ann Baker in Riverside, California. The foundation cat, Josephine, was a white domestic longhair with unique traits that Baker selectively bred. The breed was recognized by major cat associations in the 1990s and has since become one of the most popular breeds worldwide.
Care Guide
Grooming
Despite their long coat, Ragdolls require only moderate grooming. Brush 2-3 times weekly to prevent tangles and reduce shedding.
Exercise
Low to moderate activity needs. They enjoy gentle play but are not highly energetic. Interactive toys help keep them engaged.
Nutrition
Quality diet appropriate for large breeds. Monitor weight as their docile nature can lead to obesity.
Health
Screen for HCM (heart disease). Regular vet visits important for maintaining health in this larger breed.
